National Apprenticeship Week 2017: The Employers Perspective

It’s National Apprenticeship Week, and an anticipation of the launch of the APMP UK Chapter’s first Bid and Proposal Coordinator Apprenticeship later in 2017, this week we are sharing insights from individuals and businesses who have already taken part in a similar scheme in the bid industry.

Today we hear from Frank Clayton, NG Bailey’s Head of Group Learning & Development about their long-standing history of delivering apprenticeships across their organisation.  Today, Frank shares the benefits they have seen from developing bid professionals through apprenticeships:

“The Bid and Proposal Apprenticeship programme allowed us to educate our apprentices using a robust model that we know and trust, whilst working in the business and learning our approach to structuring bids and client proposals. This mix of theoretical and practical approach helped the apprentices to develop in a much more well-rounded way and add value to the business from very early on in the programme.”

As the first employer to deliver a bid and proposal apprenticeship, we asked them about the key skills their apprentices learned through the programme:

“Our apprentices have learned the importance of being able to prioritise and manage workloads, as well as an appreciation of the value of listening and being able to ask great questions. We’ve also focussed on the behavioural aspect of the role and worked to develop their skills of influence and persuasion. Finally, presentation skills are a vital part of the package; such a great deal of work is won – or lost – because of the way the final bid was presented.”

To all employers considering taking on a Bid and Proposal Apprentice, Frank said:

“Stop considering and start doing! An apprenticeship gives you an opportunity to develop your ideal employee – all the skills you need for the role, as well as experience of doing it and a strong sense of the culture of your organisation. Apprenticeships work; the methodology is sound and the upcoming apprenticeship levy is an opportunity to drive the development needs of your bid and proposals team.”
